Push notifications can drive engagement or drive users away. Here's how to get them right.
The Permission Ask
Don't ask for permission immediately on first launch. Wait until the user has experienced value, then explain why notifications will help them.
What to Send
Good Notifications:
- Time-sensitive information they requested
- Personalised, relevant updates
- Order status and delivery updates
- Security alerts
- Reminders they set
Bad Notifications:
- Generic marketing messages
- "We miss you!" re-engagement spam
- Updates they didn't ask for
- Anything that could have been an email
Best Practices
- Be timely: Send when relevant, not at 3am
- Be valuable: Every notification should help the user
- Be brief: Get to the point quickly
- Be actionable: Include clear next steps
- Be respectful: Let users control preferences
Frequency
Less is more. Start with fewer notifications. Monitor unsubscribe rates and adjust.
Personalisation
Segment your audience. A notification about a football score should only go to football fans.
